Are you Managing Your E-Publication for Success?

by Dave Wirsching on December 4, 2008

Submit the first post on your blog, or write your first e-newsletter – whether you like it or not, you’re officially a publisher. Congratulations! By the way, what’s your plan?

Above all, you have to have content. There are great sites on developing content like copyblogger, but content won’t be enough. You have to manage your “media property.” Unless you are part of a large organization, you are the reporter/columnist, and copy editor, too. But even a one person shop needs to regularly put on the “boss” hat – you need to be the editor-in-chief.

An editor-in-chief has two important responsibilities: to approve the content of the publication; and to manage what gets published when – the editorial calendar. Hopefully you have control over the “approve” button, but how’s your calendar?

An editorial calendar serves several purposes:

  • It acts as a repository for your ideas
  • Keeps you from straying from the theme for your publication
  • It allows you to establish a schedule, the first step toward keeping one
  • You can target your messages around holidays or other seasonal events
  • It serves as a history of what you’ve done
