LinkedIn Profile Basics

LinkedIn LogoA presence on LinkedIn  is a cornerstone of credibility in building relationships, online and offline.

I’ve read a number of LinkedIn profiles, and some inspiring, others easily forgotten. What made the difference? I recently pulled together some thoughts on LinkedIn profiles for a friend, and I thought I’d share them here with you:

  • People refer to a LinkedIn profile as your “online resume.” The resume analogy only goes so far. People visit your profile for a variety of reasons, some may be looking to “hire you,” but not in the traditional sense. Skills and experience are important, but just as important you are trying be memorable and make a good first impression. I think of the LinkedIn profile more like a press release in resume format.
  • Like a press release or any ad copy, you need to get your reader’s attention early. Move your most impressive and interesting items near the top.
  • Any good PR item should be easy to read (formatting is key), brief, and to the point.
  • It’s still a resume – be factual and straightforward.
  • Since a variety of people with different backgrounds will be viewing it, avoid industry-speak and jargon. Remember – make it easy to read.

An independent opinion helps. Whether it’s a friend, associate, or family member, get their input on content and format.

Another tip: Periodically review your profile. I try to carefully review mine once a month.
